Lesson 1: Your Emotional Brain

What Do We Know About The Limbic System?

There are two main parts of the brain, the Limbic System that does the feeling and the Cortex that does the thinking. The Amygdala, which is our fear center lies within the limbic system. The Amygdala never rests – it is constantly on alert, appraising the environment to check for danger – even while you sleep. For example, if there is a loud noise whilst you are asleep, you will no doubt be woken. Or if you smell smoke. However, if there is gentle rain, it is unlikely you will wake as your brain already knows that this is not dangerous to your survival.
