Recognizing Your Inner Voice

Essential to understanding self-esteem is the concept of the Pathological Inner Critic. This is the name given to the “voice” we all hear in our heads from time to time, that critical monologue that reminds you of your weaknesses and failings. It may remind you of your own voice or of one of your parents’ voices. It may consist of isolated words, brief mental images, or long diatribes.

In any case, it is this inner critic who destroys self-esteem. This section will teach you how to identify your inner critic’s messages, silence or refute them, and create an alternative, healthy, self-affirming voice of advocacy within yourself.
